What the heck is Zero To Mastery?

Zero to Mastery is both a platform and a series of tech education courses created by Andrei Neagoie.

It’s also known simply as ZTM.

And it’s on this platform where Andrei and his teaching partners produce high-value content for aspiring web developers, data scientists, FAANG hopefuls, and others.

While some of the courses have been featured on Udemy, you’ll find many more courses and Career Paths on ZTM.

YES. THE PLATFORM IS FREAKING MASSIVE.

Dive Inside: The Complete Web Developer: Zero to Mastery

Now let’s go into a specific course on the platform: The Complete Web Developer: Zero to Mastery.

This is probably Andrei Neagoie’s most popular course.

And his updates are timely as every course on the platform is updated annually.

This is pretty rare in dev education to be honest. So it’s VERY nice to see that the ZTM collection is regularly maintained.

Briefly (and I do mean very briefly), here’s what you’ll learn on frontend and backend in The Complete Web Developer:

Frontend:

Backend:

Miscellaneous

  • Security
  • Authentication
  • Git & GitHub

The SmartBrain Project

You work on one major project in this course, SmartBrain. Like the platform itself, this is a massive project.

The course landing page says there’s over 10 projects, but in all honestly they are more like coding challenges.

As an example, in the Advanced CSS section you’re challenged to build an animated robot.

But anyway, back to the SmartBrain project.

It spans over multiple chapters of the course. And it’s a full-stack image recognition app. You’ll use a subset of artificial intelligence called Machine Learning (ML) to build it.

Don’t panic though, you’ll be building it with the help of an API.

So you don’t have to know how the ins and outs of ML.

As you’ll discover in the course, that’s the beauty of APIs.

You’ll add features to SmartBrain as the course progresses. And the final result is a big, fun project that I haven’t seen in any other web dev bootcamp-style courses: It will detect faces in your pictures.

Zero to Mastery: Cost

ZeroToMastery.io is a subscription-based platform. You can get a monthly, yearly or lifetime subscription.

Currently the monthly plan costs $39.

The yearly plan costs $279.

The lifetime membership costs $999.

If you just want to test the platform out, I would recommend trying the monthly plan.

But if you know you’re going to work through numerous courses in a year, the yearly is a good investment.

And if you’re in it for the long haul and want to learn as much as possible through ZTM, we recommend the lifetime membership.

Keep in mind that you’ll also get access to all other courses released during your membership.

Does this Zero To Mastery thing work?

According to their testimonial page, ZTM works for many students. Former ZTM students are now working everywhere from Tesla to Facebook and beyond.

Andrei is one of the best teachers & his courses were a big reason I was able to get internships at both JP Morgan and Amazon. 2020 UPDATE: I just got an offer from Amazon as a full-time engineer. I couldn’t have done it without the foundations from ZTM.

And Faiz-ur adds:

I just started at Blizzard as an Associate Software Engineer. I never thought I’d be able to pivot from Technical Support to Software Engineering but Andrei’s course and the ZTM community helped me gain the confidence and knowledge to get this role.

Faiz-ur Rahman

But wait…Isn’t Zero to Mastery on Udemy?

Yes and no. While some of the ZeroToMastery.io courses are indeed on Udemy, others are exclusive to the platform.

And the ZTM platform also offers exclusive workshops and trainings for members.

To illustrate, there is a “Roadmap” video series that breaks down the skills needed for certain Career Paths.

These videos are lecture-style and serve as good primers before diving into actual programming languages and tech tools.

For example, Andrei produced The Real Web Developer Roadmap, which contains his trademark high-quality production values and runs about two hours:

Note: The Complete Junior to Senior Web Developer Roadmap is NOT part of this series. Rather it’s an actual full-fledged course that runs about 37 hours.

ZTM: Final Verdict

ZeroToMastery.io is a tech education platform with a massive amount of content.

Firstly, I recommend it for those who are serious about accelerating their software career. The only thing is, you CAN’T treat it like a sit-back-and-relax-watch-a-video thing.

While it’s tempting to take a relaxed approach to a video course, you’ll need to be proactive in order to pick up the skills.

Secondly, if you have an interest in adjacent disciplines like ethical hacking, this is an ideal platform to explore those.

However, I do NOT recommend ZTM to somebody just testing the waters of software education. You’d be better off with a free course or just exploring YouTube channels.
